Floating in the North Atlantic Ocean like a lush, volcanic mirage, Madeira has quietly become one of Europe’s most compelling destination wedding locations, yet it still feels like a secret. Think dramatic cliffs plunging into sapphire seas, botanical gardens overflowing with exotic blooms, and a year-round temperate climate that makes planning easy.

For couples seeking something more transportive than Tuscany or the French Riviera, but equally refined, Madeira delivers. It’s a place where weddings feel less like events and more like immersive experiences, unfolding across oceanfront terraces, historic estates, and hidden gardens.

During a recent visit hosted by Madeira Promotion Bureau, we were able to get a deep dive into where to host, where to stay, and what to experience for a destination wedding in Madeira that feels both elevated and unforgettable.
In The Heart of it All: Savoy Palace

If Madeira has a modern crown jewel, this is it. Rising above Funchal (the main capital city of the island) with sweeping ocean views, Savoy Palace is where contemporary design meets destination spectacle.

Weddings here can scale from intimate terrace ceremonies to grand ballroom celebrations for hundreds, with multiple venue configurations and a full-service events team. No matter the size of your group, their outstanding service and gorgeous backdrops will wow your guests from the moment they enter the grand and palatial lobby.

The versatility of Savoy Palace is unmatched. You can host a sunset ceremony overlooking the ocean from one of their many rooftop terraces, transition to cocktails in Terreiro Restaurant (known for its pale pink decor and beautiful outdoor seating), and end with a black-tie reception, all without leaving the property.

For couples wanting a more exclusive experience, The Reserve at Savoy Palace offers a boutique-within-a-hotel concept, complete with elevated privacy (think a private entrance and separate check-in desk), curated services, and an even more intimate luxury feel. With only 40 suites, many boasting private plunge pools on secluded balcony terraces, and dark, moody, sophisticated decor, VIP guests will feel totally at ease in these sexy spaces.

Old-World Glamour: Reid’s Palace
Perched high on a cliff since 1891, Reid’s Palace (a Belmond Hotel) is Madeira’s grande dame. In her pretty pink hue, this contemporary heritage style hotel brings all the beauty along with the signature Belmond service and class.
This is where Winston Churchill once painted, and where today’s couples host timeless, garden-filled weddings framed by ocean views. Expect manicured lawns, historic architecture, and a sense of ceremony that feels inherently European.
Reid’s Palace excels at elegant, medium-sized weddings, with outdoor spaces that feel cinematic and indoor salons that lend themselves to candlelit receptions. Buyouts are possible here, but make sure to book well in advance as this is a busy hotel and in demand year-round.

The blending of old and new is what makes this resort iconic. Guests can enjoy a classic pastime of afternoon tea on the Tea Terrace and take part in tasting one of 38 different teas or head off to their spa and enjoy any one of their many modern wellness treatments.
If Savoy Palace is modern Madeira, Reid’s Palace is its romantic past…refined, storied, and effortlessly glamorous.
Garden Romance: Casa Velha do Palheiro
For couples dreaming of a botanical wedding, Casa Velha do Palheiro delivers something deeply atmospheric. Set within a historic estate of lush gardens and panoramic views, it feels intimate, layered, and quietly luxurious.

By “historic” we mean built in 1804 (and refurbished in 1997) and by “lush” we mean there are over 750 different plant species on the grounds. This place is special and the second you pull up to the entrance and under the giant canopy of the black olive tree, you’ll understand.

This boutique Relais & Château property has 38 rooms, making a buyout not only tempting, but ideal. Your ceremony can unfold among camellias, outdoor water features, and hidden garden corners, while your reception will feel more like an elaborate private house party than a hotel event.

Dining is a standout here, particularly at Oxalis, where seasonal, locally inspired cuisine elevates the entire wedding weekend into a culinary experience. Recognized by the Michelin Guide for both 2025 and 2026, the gastronomic experience here is worthy of a return visit.

Cliffside Drama: Quinta do Furão
On Madeira’s rugged north coast, Quinta do Furão offers something entirely different: raw, cinematic beauty.

Set atop dramatic cliffs with endless ocean views, it’s ideal for couples who want a sense of wild romance. Gardens, terraces, and rustic interiors create a relaxed yet striking setting, particularly for sunset ceremonies.
The property was renovated in 2020 and has 65 rooms, ranging in scope from classic rooms overlooking the sea and gardens to suites and villas.

Set back on the property is an event tent that allows for weddings to be held outside year-round, taking full advantage of the gorgeous weather and stunning views.
Modern Coastal Cool: Saccharum
On the sunnier southwest coast, Saccharum offers a design-forward, contemporary wedding experience with endless views (both inside and out) in a five-star setting.

Inspired by Madeira’s sugar cane heritage, the hotel blends industrial-chic interiors with beachfront access, making it perfect for couples who want something stylish but relaxed.

Highlights include the rooftop pool, rooftop terrace event spaces and their spa. It’s immersive and a total sensory experience from start to finish.
Another stand-out is Calhau Beach Club, where barefoot cocktails and the island’s signature poncha (a rum drink that’s mixed with citrus rind, lime juice, sugar and sometimes passion fruit or orange juice), create a distinctly local, celebratory vibe.
It’s an ideal property for couples who want their wedding to feel like a destination party but with true design credibility.
Where to Honeymoon: Terra Bona
After the celebration, escape into Madeira’s wilder side. Terra Bona Nature & Vineyards is not a wedding venue; it’s a honeymoon sanctuary. With only four villas, the property is exclusive and small by design.

The owners, Maria João and Marco, have poured their hearts and souls into every inch of this special place and over time it’s expanded into creating wellness and intentional stays that incorporate the wine they make, the food they cook and the hospitality they’re both bursting to share. It’s almost a shame to share the secret…but you know we’ll never gatekeep here at DID.

Each villa has a minimalistic, Scandinavian design feel, letting natural light flood the space and intentional, streamlined furniture adorning each room. Because of this design, you feel immersed in nature, giving way to a slower rhythm that feels worlds away from the energy of a wedding weekend. It’s where you should go to decompress, reconnect, and experience the island in total seclusion.

No view from anywhere on the property is a disappointment. One direction is lush rainforest and soaring mountains, the other, a slice of cerulean sea. Even at your feet, you’ll see the myriad plants growing that will likely show up on your dinner table either in a vase or on your plate.

Dining as a Destination
Madeira’s culinary scene is an essential part of the destination wedding experience. With three Michelin Star restaurants on the island and eight on the Michelin Guide, this island is more than just a beautiful paradise; it’s a culinary sensation. Below are the “can’t miss” restaurant experiences we enjoyed firsthand.

Gazebo offers an intimate “homestyle” setting with only a handful of tables and a six or nine-course tasting menu. You are quite literally dining in Chef Filipe Janeiro’s home. It was one of the best meals we had while on the island and would be ideal for a small rehearsal dinner or honeymoon experience for two.

Avista delivers one of the island’s most spectacular dining backdrops, situated along the coast above the ocean with a menu that blends Mediterranean and Asian influences. Enjoy three meals a day here if you so desire as it’s open from morning til night.

The aforementioned Oxalis deserves a repeat, as the wine list alone is worth going for.

Madeira’s aesthetic sensibility is shaped in part by designer Nini Andrade Silva, whose work (including Savoy Palace interiors) reflects the island’s textures, colors, and natural forms. A visit to the Nini Design Centre offers couples inspiration for everything from stunning décor to the feast they’re served at Atelier Restaurant. The outdoor bar gets lively at night, so make sure to stay for an after-dinner drink. Private events are an option here as well.
Memorable Guest Experiences

A wedding weekend in Madeira should include at least one immersive group experience, and Monte Palace delivers. Founded in the 18th century by an Englishman who transformed the grounds surrounding Monte Church into a lush estate.

Today, visitors can enjoy both the original church as well as waterfalls, koi ponds, and sweeping views of Funchal and the ocean beyond. It’s a surreal, transportive setting that feels almost cinematic.

For something completely unexpected, send guests down the hill in a traditional wicker sled on the famous Monte Toboggan. It’s part thrill ride, part cultural tradition and entirely unforgettable. The toboggan ride is manned by two “Carreiros” wearing boots with rubber soles used as breaks and ropes help steer the basket.

One can’t miss experience is a visit to Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where you’ll not only get to learn the history of wine in Madeira, but the Blandy’s family legacy as well. Sip Verdelho with a slice of São Jorge and after, take a leisurely stroll through the heart of town as its location is prime.

Why Madeira Should Top Your Short List
Madeira sits at a rare intersection: it offers the visual drama of Hawaii, the refinement of Europe, and the relative value of a still-emerging destination wedding market.
Couples can host a multi-day celebration, complete with luxury accommodations, world-class dining, and unforgettable excursions and often at a lower cost than more saturated destinations.
But more than that, Madeira offers something harder to quantify: atmosphere. The kind that lingers. The kind that transforms a wedding into a shared experience guests talk about for years.
And in a world of increasingly similar destination weddings, that may be its greatest luxury of all.
