Weddings are special because they’re unique. Some prefer to say their vows in their local courthouse, while others travel across the globe. It all depends on the happy couple, but what most couples can agree on is that flowers are a central part of the whole event. They’re used in the bouquet, strewn across the aisle and set in the center of tables. Choosing them is often difficult, especially when you’re set to marry in an exotic location — but it doesn’t have to be. If you’re about to head down the aisle for your big day, here are a few pieces of advice when it comes to floral arrangements.

1. Do Your Research

Typically, there are two types of flowers you can select for your wedding. Live flowers are generally most common because they’re real and look and smell divine. They also need a decent amount of care, as they wilt and shed petals rather quickly. 

Artificial or silk flowers, on the other hand, are low maintenance because they last forever. These look just as fantastic but don’t have a scent, which can be a deal-breaker for some couples. Before you commit to a florist, see what options they have and how their vision matches up with yours. You can also educate yourself on the basics, like common lingo and flower types, so you’re extra prepared.

2. Consider the Climate

For a warm weather wedding, you’ll want to choose an arrangement that’ll beat the inevitable heat and humidity. Try to pay attention to seasonal blooms, as they’re more likely to hold up against certain weather. Avoid flimsy blossoms, like hydrangeas, because they aren’t able to hold their shape for long periods of time. Both tropical and bulb flowers are particularly durable. If you choose to use live flowers, those are your best options. In general, arrangements that look great inside on tables may not fare as well outdoors, especially in warmer climates.

3. Pick a Theme You Like

Couples may want to stay away from stereotypical color palettes, especially if they wish to be more original. For example, the beach doesn’t have to be all seashells and sand. Minimalism is an elegant option, so let nature do the work for you and choose a selection of flowers that aren’t so over-the-top. 

A variety of both whites and colors look gorgeous in summery climates, so don’t feel like you need to stick with coral and seafoam. Feel free to let your arrangements dazzle on their own.

4. Go Local

A florist based in a major city may not have the same expertise as one that’s local to your destination. You may already have a florist you’d like to work with, but if you don’t, take a look at shops that are already near the beach. They’ll have the knowledge and expertise when it comes to arrangements for destination weddings. This way, you won’t have to do a ton of research, and you can rest assured that you’re in good hands. 

If you’re getting married at a resort, consider all your options before you use their arrangements. Doing this supports small business and allows for more of a selection. That said, always choose a florist that works best for you and your special day, so if the resort’s options are ideal for your dream wedding, then go with that. 

Time to Tie the Knot

After you’ve considered all of these recommendations, you’ll be perfectly ready to walk down the aisle. Selecting the right flowers is often stressful, but it doesn’t have to be when you take this advice into account.
