We spoke with photographer Nathan Jaffan and wedding planner Marita Campanella, who shared their insider advice on navigating Southern Italy’s distinct landscapes, weather, and way of life. Together, they’ve helped countless couples turn this dream destination into a seamless, unforgettable experience.

Lighting and Timing: The Beauty and the Challenge

Lighting in Southern Italy is nothing short of magical, but it can be deceptively tricky. On the Amalfi Coast, those dramatic cliffs that make for postcard-perfect views also cause daylight to fade earlier than the official sunset. “Ceremonies should start a bit sooner to catch flattering light before shadows take over,” Nathan explains.

In Sicilian baroque towns, white stone piazzas bounce light harshly at midday (hello, squinting!) but take on a soft, romantic glow at blue hour. Meanwhile, in the open fields of Puglia, the combination of warm light and lime-washed trulli makes late afternoon the most forgiving and flattering window.

Marita adds, “Couples can plan around these quirks by slipping into shaded alleys or courtyards during the heat of the day and saving portraits for that last golden hour before sunset. A little timeline flexibility goes a long way.”

The “Instagram vs. Reality” Factor

It’s easy to fall in love with dreamy photos of Positano’s cliffs, Ravello’s terraces, or Locorotondo’s trulli-lined streets, but in reality, these locations can be crowded, compact, and sometimes require special permits.

“Narrow streets, limited space, and required permissions mean you can’t linger for long,” Marita notes. “Take Alberobello, for example: those iconic whitewashed images are stunning, but they’re usually captured carefully at sunrise, before the heat and tour buses roll in.”

By mid-morning, the town hums with visitors, transforming from a serene village into a bustling attraction. The workaround? Nathan recommends, “Couples who want that storybook look often plan a sunrise portrait session the day before or after their wedding, when the trulli feel quiet and timeless.”

When Culture Shapes the Timeline

Southern Italy runs on its own rhythm, and weddings beautifully reflect that. “Dinners here aren’t rushed affairs,” Marita says. “They unfold slowly, course by course, often under the stars.”

For photographers, that slower pace creates incredible opportunities. “The most emotional and atmospheric moments happen after dark,” Nathan adds. “We always encourage couples to plan coverage that includes candlelit toasts, long tables glowing under string lights, and the magic of a packed dance floor at midnight. It’s a side of Italy that feels unforgettable in photos.”

Weather and the Art of Flexibility

From sea breezes to surprise summer storms, the weather in Southern Italy can be as dramatic as the views. “Coastal towns get strong winds that can sweep veils and hair into motion, sudden summer storms appear out of nowhere, and inland heat can be intense,” Nathan shares.

Marita agrees that flexibility is key: “Have a shaded or covered Plan B, treat the wind as part of your story, and keep plenty of water, fans, or parasols handy for guests. With the right mindset, even unpredictable weather adds to the atmosphere rather than takes away from it.”

The Magic of the Shoulder Seasons

Timing your wedding for the right season can make all the difference. “Spring and fall are truly the sweet spot in Southern Italy,” Nathan says.

In May and June, the light is soft and the landscapes lush, without the crush of peak tourism. September and October bring golden afternoons, warm evenings, and a more relaxed feel. “Summer has its own beauty, of course,” Marita adds, “but if couples want that magical light paired with a little more breathing room, the shoulder seasons are hard to beat.”

The Unexpected Joys of Italian Life

Perhaps the most beautiful surprise for couples marrying in Southern Italy is how everyday life weaves into their celebration. “Kids playing soccer in a piazza, locals applauding as you walk through cobblestone streets, or an accordion player who seems to appear out of nowhere, it’s all unscripted,” says Nathan.

Those spontaneous, human moments are what make Southern Italy so unforgettable. “The charm isn’t just in the architecture or landscapes,” Marita adds, “but in those real interactions you can’t plan for, but will never forget.”
