Destination Wedding on the Pristine Sands of Destin, Florida

Patricia and Willie met in uniform, at their first Air Force duty station in San Antonio, Texas. Two people were dropped into the same demanding world and found, unexpectedly, that they fit together inside it. Years later, their shared world brought them to the shores of Destin, Florida, where in September 2024, Patricia and Willie stood before the Gulf of Mexico and made it official, in a ceremony as layered and intentional as the love story behind it.

From Duty Station to Destiny

Their love story began not with a swipe or a setup, but in the structured, demanding world of military service. “We met in San Antonio, TX, during our first duty station while serving in the Air Force,” Patricia recalls. “From the moment we crossed paths, a strong friendship blossomed as we navigated the challenges and adventures of our new environment. Over time, that friendship deepened into a beautiful romance, built on trust, shared experiences, and mutual support.”

That foundation,  forged in service and sealed through years of partnership, is exactly the kind of love story that feels written in the stars.

Why the Beach? Why Florida?

For Patricia, a beachfront ceremony was never just an aesthetic choice. It was a calling. “I have always dreamed of saying our vows by the ocean, where the beauty and serenity of the beach symbolize new beginnings and healing,” she explains.

But the decision to marry near Florida’s Gulf Coast carried a weight far more profound than most guests could have imagined. In 2010, the couple lost their son at the age of 15 in a drowning incident, shortly after a family beach trip in Florida. Choosing to return to the coast, to celebrate love in the very place where grief once lived, was an act of extraordinary courage and grace.

“Being close to that meaningful location allows us to honor his memory while celebrating our love in a setting that holds such significance for us,” Patricia shares. It is a testament to the couple’s belief that joy and sorrow can coexist, and that love is powerful enough to hold both.

Designing a Day Deep with Meaning

The aesthetic of the day was stunning in its simplicity: primarily white and lavender, a palette chosen with the most tender of intentions. “Everything was primarily white and lavender, thoughtfully chosen to honor our mothers, both of whom passed away in recent years,” Patricia explains. “The gentle lavender complemented the pure white, symbolizing love, remembrance, and the enduring bond we share with them.”

That vision was brought to life by Umbella Luxury Events, the couple’s wedding planner and design team. “The decor exceeded all my expectations,” says Patricia, “transforming the space into a truly amazing setting that radiated beauty and serenity.”

The ceremony itself honored tradition while making space for deeply personal moments. And at the close of the reception, guests were invited to participate in a balloon release, a collective tribute to loved ones who had passed. “Guests were invited to participate in this special gesture, allowing everyone to remember and honor their loved ones who are no longer with us,” Patricia reflects, “creating a touching and collective tribute that added a deeply personal touch to our special day.”

Planning From Afar: Without the Stress

Pulling off a destination wedding from a distance is no small feat, but the couple credits their planner, Shauna of Umbella Luxury Events, as the linchpin that held everything together. “Umbella was an absolute lifesaver while planning from afar,” says Patricia. “They handled everything seamlessly, coordinating all the details with such professionalism and care. They even zoomed with us to view the beach house and provided honest feedback, making us feel involved despite the distance.”

From managing vendors to navigating last-minute music changes, Umbella served as the couple’s eyes, ears, and calm amid any storm, including a very literal one. When rain threatened the outdoor ceremony, Shauna had a contingency plan ready. “She did a fantastic job of preparing us to move the ceremony inside if needed, and in the end, the day unfolded beautifully exactly as it was meant to.”

Advice for Couples Dreaming of a Destination Wedding

For couples considering a similar path, Patricia’s advice is clear and heartfelt: “One key lesson I learned firsthand is the importance of choosing a wedding planner, as there are so many moving pieces that it can become overwhelming without professional help.”

Beyond logistics, she encourages couples to think deeply about place. “I would advise couples to select a destination that is relaxing for both you and your guests, and most importantly, one that holds personal meaning. My family and I still talk about how we wish we could relive that special experience.”
