For Texans Glaiza and Kevin, finding the perfect wedding venue was a journey that started in their home state, and unexpectedly led them across the world. After countless venue visits and months of searching, they realized they weren’t just looking for a place to get married; they were searching for a feeling. That feeling came to life across the pond in Italy, where the sweeping terraces of Villa Cipressi and the timeless arches of Villa del Balbianello captured everything they had envisioned for their day.
“We eventually realized that there were no venues in Texas that matched exactly what we had in mind; it felt like we were looking for a European venue in Texas,” says Glaiza.
When the couple imagined their wedding, they felt drawn to breathtaking views, a sense of history, and architecture that exuded romance. Varenna, a charming fishing town along Lake Como, offered that and more. Villa del Balbianello, built in 1787, provided an incomparable setting with flawless terraces, colorful flower beds, an aged church, a grand staircase, and an incredible view of the deep blue waters of Lake Como.
For Glaiza and Kevin, planning a wedding abroad meant ensuring their guests had a seamless and enjoyable experience. The couple reserved hotel rooms at their reception venue, Hotel Villa Cipressi, while helping others who opted for different accommodations find an Airbnb or other hotels nearby. Their detailed wedding website provided guests with travel tips, including flight recommendations, train schedules, and things to do in the Varenna area.
Glaiza and Kevin’s outdoor wedding ceremony had sweeping, romantic views of Lake Como, with soft florals in shades of peach and blue complementing the natural surroundings. The bride and guests arrived by motor boat for the ceremony, setting the tone for an elegant and unforgettable celebration.
“For our vows, we wrote them together, ensuring they truly reflected our relationship,” says Kevin.
To fully embrace their Lake Como wedding, Glaiza and Kevin incorporated Italian traditions into their day. Guests enjoyed two aperitivos (pre-meal drinks meant to “open” the stomach before eating), a staple in Italian culture, followed by a decadent five-course meal featuring both regional and classic flavors.
For the newlyweds, making their guests feel truly included was just as important as the details of the wedding itself. They thoughtfully arranged seating to help introduce guests who’d connect well. To create a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, they incorporated interactive elements, including a surprise karaoke session.
“We incorporated elements that encouraged everyone to let loose and enjoy themselves,” says Glaiza.
A budgeting tip the couple suggests is to leave plenty of room for unexpected expenses to alleviate potential stress.
“Destination weddings can come with unique challenges, and being in an unfamiliar location often means that costs can be unpredictable,” says Kevin.
For Glaiza and Kevin, this Lake Como wedding was a dream realized. If the newlyweds could do it again, they would only make one change to make their celebration even more meaningful.
“We’d recommend couples make the most of the destination and the time they have by planning a few extra gatherings before the big day,” says Kevin. “It adds so much more to the experience for both you and your guests.”
