For Connie and Thuan, the journey to the altar was a beautiful slow burn. Having first met as coworkers at Microsoft in 2013, the pair spent an entire decade building a foundation of friendship before life took a romantic turn in 2023. When it finally came time to say “I do,” they knew they wanted a celebration that was as intentional and enduring as their history.

“It took a decade, but in 2023, our friendship finally turned into something more, and it was totally worth the wait,” Connie says.

To honor that wait, they swapped the rainy skies of Seattle for the turquoise waters of Cancun, seeking an intimate escape that doubled as a vacation for their favorite people.

The Preparation

The wedding day began at Villa La Joya, a private estate that offered the couple exactly what they were looking for: a luxury home feel with a secluded waterfront view. While Angye Abarca perfected the bridal party’s look, Connie stepped into a gown complemented by her bridesmaids in soft hues from Billy J. Thuan and his groomsmen kept things sharp and sophisticated in custom designs by Indochino.

Choosing the venue sight-unseen from across the continent could have been a logistical nightmare, but the couple leaned heavily on their planning team at Mango Weddings.

“The biggest challenge was selecting a venue without seeing it in person, but our wedding planner helped us visualize the space with detailed photos, which made the process much easier and stress-free,” says Connie.

Relaxed Ceremony with a Twist

As guests took their seats, the ceremony leaned into a relaxed, “coastal chic” atmosphere. Against a backdrop of white and dusty blue florals by Cherry Blossom, the couple prioritized intimacy over formality. In a unique twist, the bridal party joined the guests in the seating area after the processional so they could witness the nuptials comfortably.

The ceremony was officiated by one of Connie’s best friends, and the couple exchanged personal vows that reflected their ten-year evolution.

“We knew we wanted a water view without being directly on the sand,” Thuan says, “plus a private location where only our guests would be present. This venue checked all the boxes and gave us the intimate setting we envisioned.”

The Cocktail Hour & Decor

Following the “I do’s,” the energy shifted to a soulful celebration. A live saxophone player set the tone for the cocktail hour, where Be You Service poured signature drinks, not just for “Him” and “Her,” but a special tribute drink for their dog, Letty.

The aesthetic, captured by photographer Jacqueline Benét and videographer Frame Wedding Film, featured natural wood tones and elegant stationery by Shine Wedding, blending seamlessly with the villa’s architecture and the Caribbean horizon.

The Sunset Reception & The Plunge

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the celebration moved into high gear. Eschewing traditional wedding snacks, the couple brought their personal favorites to Mexico: a bubble tea and crepe station that served as a sweet nod to their daily lives.

The night concluded with a breathtaking private fireworks display over the ocean, but the real finale was a spontaneous burst of joy. Following the lead of the tropical heat and the high spirits of the day, the couple and their guests ended the night by jumping into the villa’s pool, fully clothed.

Looking Back

Reflecting on their destination experience, Connie and Thuan emphasize that the secret to a stress-free wedding is the people you hire to execute it.

“For a destination wedding, the most important thing is to trust your team,” the couple advises. “We arrived a few days before the wedding, and by then, there was nothing left to do but enjoy the moment. Trusting the process allowed us to fully relax, let go of stress, and truly savor the experience.”
