On a bright August day in Oahu, Hawaii, monstera scaling a tall canopy of trees above and an ethereal floral installation behind, Nikki and Josh exchanged marriage vows at Sunset Ranch.

Our story begins with Nikki’s move to Northern California in 2019. Eager to set up her life in a new setting, she decided to pursue Hinge in hopes of meeting her future husband. That’s when she came across Josh. After a purely NorCal first date of hiking, the two became inseparable. 

An adventurous couple from the start, a destination wedding appealed to Nikki and Josh right away. Not only was it the chance to trade cool temperatures and tall pines for Hawaii’s warm sun and tropical vegetation that had the couple’s sights set on Oahu, but it was Sunset Ranch itself.  

“We visited many sites on Oahu and Kauai, but nothing felt right,” Nikki says. “Once we stepped onto Sunset Ranch, it was an immediate body ‘Yes.’ It was so beautiful, peaceful, and secluded.”

Beyond the venue’s natural splendor, opting for Sunset Ranch made the long-distance planning process unexpectedly seamless. While many couples find remote coordination daunting, Nikki and Josh discovered that having the right team in place made all the difference.

“This was probably the easiest wedding process ever,” Nikki shares. “A lot of my friends told me how stressful wedding planning is, and at times it is, but Alia and the Sunset Ranch team and all my vendors were so responsive via email and Zoom calls.”

The venue’s comprehensive services eliminated much of the usual logistical friction. Beyond supplying essential rentals like chairs and linens, the venue allowed the couple the flexibility to bring in select preferred vendors, including photographer Masha Sahkno and florist La Flor Events, to fully realize their vision. 

When it came to the aesthetic, the couple aimed for a balance of organic island beauty and personal, modern accents. 

“We worked closely with the florist to depict more of an ‘ethereal, art installation, local Oahu flora’ type feel,” Nikki says. “It was really important for us to have the florists choose what was local and in season. We think they nailed it completely!”

As avid photography enthusiasts, Nikki and Josh set up a welcome table equipped with Polaroids and digital camcorders, encouraging guests to capture candid moments throughout the celebration. The couple also took a hands-on approach to their stationery; Josh even coded their digital invitations, while physical save-the-dates and personalized souvenirs like custom matchboxes and fans greeted arriving loved ones. Tablescapes featured thrifted silver trays, moss, black stones, and silver coupes, seamlessly tying together the couple’s artistic vision.

Set in the lush Ferns Gardens, the ceremony was “short and simple.” Respecting their family backgrounds and traditions, the couple incorporated a family circle prayer and included a traditional Korean parent acknowledgment. Adding a sweet personal element to the service, Nikki’s parents sang “The Prayer” after the family blessing.

Following the ceremony, guests transitioned to Charlie’s Pond on the ranch grounds for an outdoor reception filled with island cuisine catered by Chef Elmer’s Island Cuisine, sweet treats from Asato Family Shop and Hawaii Candy Factory, a custom cake from A Cake Life, and lively music for dancing courtesy of DJ J.ESCO.

Reflecting on their experience, Nikki and Josh encourage other couples planning a destination wedding to prioritize venue synergy and clear communication. “If you have a venue that knows all your other vendors well and has worked with them before, it makes a world of a difference so that you are hands off on your wedding day,” Nikki says.
