When a Texan bride and an Irish groom living in Abu Dhabi set out to plan a destination wedding, one thing was certain: their celebration would be far from ordinary. For Lan and Donal, love sparked on Tinder in the United Arab Emirates and led them on a journey that would culminate in a two-day Portugal wedding at Quinta da Bichinha in the heart of the country’s wine region.
A Global Gathering in Sunny Portugal
“We live in Abu Dhabi, but I’m from Texas and Donal is from Ireland,” Lan explains. “We had friends and family coming from all over the world, so it made sense to meet somewhere beautiful and central.” With the intense summer heat of the UAE and Ireland’s unpredictable weather, the couple landed on Portugal as the ideal setting. “Our friends and family love to travel, so it really was a no-brainer,” Donal adds.
Surf, Sun, and the Spirit of Celebration
The couple’s love of surf, food, and adventure made Portugal a natural choice, but choosing the exact location was its own adventure. “There are so many Facebook groups for couples planning Portugal weddings,” Lan says. “That’s how we found Quinta da Bichinha, and from the first conversation with Diogo, the venue coordinator, we just knew.”
Nestled in the countryside of Alenquer, Quinta da Bichinha delivered not only breathtaking views but also exceptional hospitality. “They were the first team we spoke to, and we have zero regrets. The two days we spent there were absolutely magical.”
Two Days, Two Cultures, One Unforgettable Experience
The wedding was split into two distinct days, each with its own character and cultural flair. Day one honored Lan’s Vietnamese heritage with a traditional ceremony. “We brought lanterns, lucky money boxes, and a tea set,” she shares. “It meant so much to me and my parents to bring our traditions to Portugal.”
The setup was elegant and intentional, with long tables dressed in rich red roses and soft candlelight. “We showed Diogo our vision, and he executed it perfectly,” Lan says.
For day two, the couple shifted the mood entirely. “We went with a wildflower color palette—completely different from the first day. We wanted guests to feel a change in vibe,” Donal explains. “The venue handled all the decor, which was a huge relief.”
An Intimate Ceremony Without Convention
Lan and Donal’s ceremony broke from traditional formats in other ways, too. They chose not to have a bridal party, mindful of the financial and travel obligations already placed on their guests. “We just wanted everyone to relax and enjoy,” says Lan. Instead, they opted for something deeply personal: Lan’s brother officiated the wedding. “Having someone who knew us both so well made it incredibly meaningful.”
Planning from Afar With Confidence
Though they didn’t set eyes on their venue until a week before the big day, the couple never doubted their decision. “I joined a Facebook group specifically for Bichinha brides,” Lan says. “It was such a helpful space—people shared photos, ideas, and tips constantly.”
Even from thousands of miles away, the planning process was surprisingly smooth. “Diogo and his team were so responsive and professional. We felt totally at ease,” Donal adds.
A Destination That Delivered More Than Just a Wedding Day
Had they stayed local, Lan and Donal believe their wedding might have lost some of its magic. “If we were in Ireland or Texas, we probably would’ve had more guests, but it would’ve been more chaotic,” Lan says. “Instead, everyone came to Lisbon for the week, and we got to hang out with them beforehand. It made the wedding day feel more intimate and relaxed.”
Advice From the Heart
Looking back, the couple has one piece of advice: don’t sweat the small stuff. “On the day, all those little worries disappear,” Lan says. “You won’t remember if a flower was out of place—you’ll remember dancing with your friends, holding your partner’s hand, and being surrounded by love.”
Their Portugal wedding at Quinta da Bichinha was more than a celebration—it was a testament to what happens when culture, adventure, and genuine connection come together in one unforgettable place.
