A Storybook Colorado WeddingWords by Courtney Kellar

Chicago couple Sari and Matt are lifelong fans of Colorado, so when they opted for an intimate destination wedding, they knew just the place: Beaver Creek. “As a child, Matt spent many vacations in Beaver Creek with his family,” says Sari. “As a couple, we visit Colorado a couple of times a year. It is such a beautiful community and the mountain views and scenery fit the storybook wedding we envisioned. It’s a place we really enjoy and we wanted to share it with our family and friends.”
While the couple understood from the beginning that not all RSVP’s would come back with a “yes,” they were surprised by the number of guests who ended up attending the wedding. Once the guests did arrive, they weren’t disappointed. “Our guests who hadn’t been to the Vail/Beaver Creek area before immediately understood why we chose this destination,” recalls the bride. “We heard many comments about the scenery being right out of a storybook and several of our friends are already thinking about their next trip to [Beaver Creek.]”
When it came to their chosen destination, the couple really only had two worries: altitude sickness and travel logistics. “We were concerned about our guests having altitude sickness, so we warned everyone repeatedly to hydrate and to take it easy on the first day. Everyone was feeling great for the wedding – just a little more winded than usual from dancing!
“Most of the guests flew into Denver and the most difficult part of travel was probably getting from Denver to Beaver Creek. Most people rented cards or took the shuttle. We listed transportation options in our invitations so people could plan ahead.”
Overall, Sari and Matt had a textbook experience planning their destination wedding. Thanks to making a few planning trips and the groom’s parents living close to Beaver Creek, they really didn’t run into any obstacles while planning. The couple also credits their venue, the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, with being very organized and accommodating. Despite their wonderful experience, the couple still has some valuable advice to share with other couples.
“Enjoy every minute [of planning], take it all in; it goes by so fast,” says Sari. “As Matt said to me every time I started to stress about the details – at the end of the day, you’re still going to be married! The fact that you’re getting married and starting your lives together is the important part. Years from now, most people won’t remember what color your flowers were, but they will remember how happy you were and how much love you had for each other as a bride and groom.”
