The effect of tariffs (current or pending) on goods imported to the U.S. is adding unexpected costs to everything from wedding gowns to décor, leaving many engaged couples wondering: “How can we still have the wedding we’ve dreamed of without blowing our budget?”
The good news? With the right strategies—and a bit of flexibility—you can navigate these economic hurdles and plan a meaningful celebration without compromise. We spoke to industry experts who are helping couples adapt to this new reality. Here’s what they suggest:

1. Embrace a Smaller Guest List
Scaling back the number of guests doesn’t mean sacrificing joy—it can actually enhance it.
“One of the most effective strategies is to embrace the beauty of a more intimate guest count,” says destination wedding planner Taryn Stark Wyant. “This not only allows your budget to go further, but also makes it easier to focus on quality, immersive experiences.”

2. Source Locally and Sustainably
Photographer Andrea Enger has seen how tariffs are impacting her industry. “Tariffs are noticeably impacting wedding budgets, especially in categories that rely heavily on imported goods. The most significant impact is in wedding attire, floral & design materials, and electronics.”
Her advice? Go local and go simple. “Couples can reduce tariff-related costs by leaning into sustainability and local sourcing. This includes choosing minimalist, intentional decor, or even pre-owned attire.”

3. Book Early and Add a Budget Buffer
Planning ahead has never been more important. “Secure your chosen vendors and their pricing as early as possible,” advises wedding planner Mari Carmen Maffioli. “Booking early, especially for popular services such as venues, caterers, and photographers, can often secure a fixed price that may not be available later. Add a buffer to your wedding budget to account for potential cost increases due to tariffs.”

4. Hire a Planner Who Can Strategize
According to Wyant, having a planner is about more than logistics—it’s about a smart strategy. “A seasoned professional can advise you on potential tariff-related challenges, source cost-effective alternatives, and ensure that couples make informed decisions without compromising their vision.”

5. Understand Vendor Challenges Too
It’s not just couples having to adjust their approach to weddings—vendors are feeling the squeeze too. “Vendors are also facing challenges and may have to absorb the increased costs or pass them on to couples,” says Maffioli. “It’s important for both sides to communicate clearly and work together on creative solutions.” Have grace for your vendors, understanding they are also navigating the challenges alongside you.
For today’s engaged couples, navigating wedding planning in the wake of tariffs doesn’t have to mean giving up your dream day—it means planning smarter and compromising in areas that aren’t a priority for you.
