After a long period of dual or monochrome color palettes reigning wedding design trends, the floodgates are opening to a new era. This wedding design era is bursting with multi-colored palettes and over-the-top details, and we’ve noticed the couples carrying the torch in this case often belong to the LGBTQ community. Honestly? It makes sense! Why wouldn’t they want to be loud with their love after years of having to prove it could fit neatly inside of society’s idea of what makes a wedding?
So, in honor of Pride Month, we’re highlighting the areas LGBTQ couples have been bringing color back into their celebrations, using past Destination I Do real wedding features as examples.

Anchoring the Ceremony with Custom Motifs
For their stunning Thailand wedding at W Koh Samui, Chris and Kai completely bypassed generic backdrops, choosing instead to design a custom motif based on a paired-wing bird from Chinese mythology. They printed the vibrant design in New York and brought it all the way to Thailand.

A “Color-Soaked” Reception Tablescape
Reception tables are where guests spend a massive portion of the evening, making them prime real estate for maximalism. Instead of matching a dual-color palette, Natalie and Patrick’s Playa Mujeres celebration featured reception tables like a living canvas where brightly colored candlesticks, mismatched glassware, and exploding floral arrangements created a feast for the senses.

Blend High-Octane Themes with Historic Architecture
If your destination boasts serene, classic, or historic architecture, bringing in a high-octane theme like disco-glam or neon lighting can liven the mood of the whole celebration. For a masterclass in this, look to Clayton and Jeffrey, who brought wedded bliss and mirrorball kisses to San Miguel de Allende.
“We told our florist and planner: jungle meets disco meets RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Jeffrey says. Mission: achieved!

Switch Into Second-Look Showstoppers
Who says color is reserved just for the flowers and other decor? Your fashion choices are an incredible place to inject personality and maximalism. While formal ivory or black attire might rule the ceremony, a wow-ing second look ensures the party starts the moment you’re introduced at the reception. Clayton and Jeffrey swapped their classic wedding tuxedos for bold, custom sequin disco jackets imported from Poland to match their reception vibe and survive a dance floor that had “no slow songs allowed.”
As you plan your own destination getaway, remember that your wedding day should be a reflection of your unique love story. Don’t be afraid to take up space, defy the norms and inject a little colorful, maximalist magic into your celebration. After all, love is too big and too bright to be kept in a beige box!
