To pull off a wedding with the backdrop of an iconic natural wonder, Vincent and Laurie turned to the emerald waters of Vietnam’s Halong Bay. In May of 2025, the couple hosted an intimate celebration that prioritized the guest experience and leaned into the “Indochine” aesthetic. Read on to learn more about how Vincent and Laurie transformed a challenging UNESCO World Heritage site into a seamless, multi-day adventure.

Planning a wedding on a moving vessel requires a level of coordination far beyond a traditional ballroom. The couple enlisted Hanoi-based Bayla Vietnam Wedding Planner to navigate the complexities of transporting 70+ guests through a three-stage itinerary:

A rooftop event with a crowd gathered near a buffet, a framed sign by flowers, and an overhead view showing people mingling on the terrace.

The Hanoi Kickoff: Guests were first hosted at the Peridot Grand Hotel in Hanoi. The city’s ancient charm served as the starting point, with a welcome party held at the Ignite Sky Bar. During the welcome festivities, the couple and their wedding party donned áo dài, the national garment of Vietnam. By inviting their friends to wear these elegant, long tunics, they turned a standard cocktail hour into a vibrant cultural immersion.

The Coastal Transition: From Hanoi, the group was shuttled via a coordinated fleet of private transports to The Yacht Hotel in Halong, ensuring everyone was positioned near the pier for embarkation.

The Floating Venue: The couple selected the Indochine Premium Cruises. Unlike many older ships in the bay, this vessel offered a modern “Indochine” interior, a fusion of French colonial elegance and traditional Vietnamese motifs that served as a built-in decor element.

“The travel logistics of planning a 5-day wedding were our biggest hurdle… it was like herding a bunch of cats,” Laurie jokes. “Not the most fun or creative part of our wedding planning process, but necessary to ensure everyone got to the right place at the right time.”

Symbolism in the Details

The couple found a poetic link between their two worlds of Southern California and Northern Vietnam through a floof Paradise flower represented home to them. Working with Fléur by Tunlee, Laurie and Vincent also incorporated the flowers’ vivid oranges and deep greens to anchor the wedding’s “terracotta and teal” color scheme, perfectly complementing the moody limestone karsts of the bay.

Pearl Farming Heritage

Halong Bay is world-renowned for its pearl oysters. To honor this, Laurie featured pearls throughout her styling, including a family heirloom bracelet restrung from her grandmother’s 1957 wedding necklace. The stationery by Stationery Space also included shimmering shell designs with hand-placed pearls.

The “Wow” Factor: A Surprise on the Sundeck

One of the most complex logistical feats was the finale. In Vietnam, fireworks are strictly regulated, but the couple worked with their planners to secure government-sanctioned pyrotechnics. As they finished their first dance, a choreographed routine to Ellie Goulding’s “Your Song,” the sky above the quiet bay erupted.

“I recommend doing the fireworks or doing a big ‘WOW’ thing for your guests,” the bride advises. “Our guests’ reactions were priceless.”

Advice for Destination Couples

For couples considering a similar path, Laurie emphasizes that the secret to a successful international wedding lies in the pre-wedding site visit. By traveling to Vietnam months early, they “stress-tested” every touchpoint, ensuring that every potential friction point was smoothed over before the first guest arrived.

Ultimately, Vincent and Laurie proved that while a destination wedding in Halong Bay does require meticulous administrative work, the payoff is a sensory experience that a traditional venue simply cannot replicate!

Marrying amidst the ancient limestone pillars offers a sense of perspective and timelessness, turning a single day into a legendary voyage. If you are looking for a location that combines deep cultural roots with the sheer, quiet drama of the natural world, this floating sanctuary just might be the perfect match.
