Dan and Carol’s love story started in the most ordinary of places—a snack machine. They worked in the same company, passing in the hallways until one day, a casual hello at the vending machine led to something much bigger. Years later, that simple moment evolved into a cross-cultural wedding celebration in the heart of Mérida, Mexico.

Choosing a Destination That Felt Like “Them”

With family scattered across the U.S. and Europe, the couple quickly ruled out a hometown wedding. “Our families and friends live all over the US and Europe, so there was no advantage to a local wedding,” Carol shares. “We decided a destination would be most memorable for us and our guests.”

Their hearts were already set on Mérida. A year earlier, they had vacationed in the Yucatán and immediately felt at home. “The area felt very comfortable to us,” says Carol. It wasn’t the easiest choice logistically—unlike the resort towns further east, Mérida doesn’t cater heavily to English-speaking tourists. But as Dan put it, “We saw it as trading convenience for culture.” Carol’s Spanish skills sealed the deal, making her the unofficial coordinator not just for vendors, but for all their guests as well.

Falling in Love with Hacienda Tamchen

Instagram led them to their dream venue before they even visited the city. “Carol found several venues in Mérida on Instagram, but before we even made our first trip we had already chosen Hacienda Tamchen,” says Dan. “The balance of historic architecture with luxury was second to none.” When they finally saw the hacienda in person, it surpassed every expectation.

To prepare, they traveled to Mérida seven months before the big day. That trip was jam-packed: tasting menus, flower selections, music planning, and a chance to soak up the city so they could recommend the best spots to their guests. The highlight? Meeting Señor Gabriel, a local Uber driver who quickly became part of the wedding team. “He happily gave us his phone number and was hugely helpful by making himself and his friends available during our wedding week,” Dan recalls.

A Ceremony Beneath the Ceiba Tree

The wedding itself was a heartfelt blend of family, culture, and tradition. Carol’s son walked her down the aisle, while Dan’s son delivered a moving reading and presented the rings. Under a centuries-old Ceiba tree strung with glowing candles, the couple exchanged vows in both English and Spanish. “The ceremony was short, but personal,” says Carol.

They also embraced traditions from Latin culture. The lazo—a figure-eight cord draped around their shoulders—symbolized the unity of their lives, while Las Arras Matrimoniales, 13 gold coins, represented Dan’s promise to support Carol. “We wanted it to reflect both of us,” says Dan, “and also the family we were creating together.”

A Reception Full of Surprises

When the dance floor opened, it wasn’t just the music that got guests moving. Carol’s son had picked up colorful Mexican wrestling masks from street vendors, which quickly became the unofficial party uniform. “They found their way to the dance floor,” Carol laughs. “Suddenly we had luchadores everywhere!”

Adding to the fun were some furry guests—Ponyland donkeys, who charmed everyone and made the celebration feel even more unforgettable.

What They Learned Along the Way

Planning a wedding from afar can feel overwhelming, but Dan and Carol walked away with wisdom for other couples. “It’s good to have a vision but not get too caught up in the details,” Carol says. “In some ways, it’s easier to leave the details to the professionals.”

And though they admit a wedding at home might have been smaller and simpler, the memories created in Mérida were worth every bit of effort. “The destination was part of the appeal,” says Dan. “It wasn’t just about the wedding day—it was about gathering everyone together to make memories.”

Culture, Candles, and Family Ties

Guests gathered beneath an ancient Ceiba tree adorned with flickering candles. Carol’s son walked her down the aisle, and Dan’s son performed a heartfelt reading before presenting the rings. The ceremony blended English and Spanish, reflecting their fusion of families and cultures.

By the reception, the masks had migrated to the dance floor, sparking some unforgettable photo ops. And, in a move that charmed guests young and old, the couple even included Ponyland donkeys as part of the celebration.
